Some definitions to start:
An Ironman race consists of a 2.4 mile open water swim, followed by a 112 mile bike (often with gruelling hills), and then to top it off, like a cherry on a sundae, a full length marathon.
An "Olympic" length triathlon is also sometimes called "International distance." It is a 1500 meter swim, followed by a 25 mile bike, then topped off with a 10k.
A "Sprint" distance is half a standard Olympic race, 750 meter swim, 12.5 mile bike, and 5k run.
"Mini" triathlons are even shorter than sprints.
However, if you do go to a race and find your GPS system tells you that you have gone more than the set distances, or less, it could be right. The distances are only approximate.
A "reverse" triathlon is usually done in the winter, to protect athletes from running and biking after a wet swim. It's done run, bike, swim, with the swim indoors in a pool.
Below are some of the races that I have earned medals in:
Jordanelle Triathlon 2004 (Olympic) First Place F30-34 2:44 (swim-:30, bike-1:18, run-:52)
Ogden Valley Triathlon 2004 (Olympic) First Place F30-34 3:04 (swim-:29, bike-1:45, run-:54) --I did this on a mountain bike!
Turkey Tri 2005 (Reverse Sprint) First Place F 30-34 1:06 (run-:23, bike-:32, swim-:7)
Xango Echo Triathlon 2006 (Olympic) First Place F35-39 2:44 (swim-:29, bike-1:15, run-:53)
Jordanelle Triathlon 2006 (Olympic) First Place F35-39 2:32 (swim-:28, bike-1:12, run-:47)
Ogden Valley Triathlon 2006 (Olympic) Second Place F35-39 2:59 (run-:22, bike-1:44, run-"49)
It was so cold this year that the water out of the lake would have frozen on any bikers immediately, so the race was turned into a run-bike-run (5k run, 33 mile bike, 10k run)
Utah Half 2006 (Half Ironman) First Place F35-39 5:39 (swim-:33, bike-2:39, run-2:22)
Ogden Valley Triathlon 2007 (Olympic)Third Place F35-39 (swim-:27, bike(30 miles)-1:26, run-:53)
Turkey Tri 2007 (Reverse Sprint) Third Place Overall (run-22, bike-30, swim-:6)
Swim-1:10
Bike-6:24
Run-5:15

My 5k PR is currently at 21:04, set at a local Turkey trot in 2006. I'd like to get it under 20:00. But I'd like to do lots of things, like fly. And that's not happening right now, either.
I've done four marathons, Ogden Valley 2004 4:46, Milkwaukee Lakefront 2004 4:04, Top of Utah 2006 3:40 (PR), and Ogden Valley 2007 4:24.
The first marathon I did, I did no training at all. The longest run I had done before was only about 5.5 miles.
So why did I think I should run a marathon? Well, for the first time in my life, I was able to run regularly without pain. I didn't know how long it would last, and I figured (stupidly) if I was ever going to run a marathon, I'd better do it now.
A couple of wise friends tried to talk me out of it, but I was very stubborn. I did a program of walking/running, where I ran until I hit a mile marker, then walked for one minute. I did this the whole marathon, and still am surprised that I finished. I couldn't run for months afterwards, though, so I can't say I recommend the stubbornness method.
I have said before that I think running a marathon is like giving birth to twins. Through your eyeballs. I still believe this is true
